Record Production

It's more Art than Science, most importantly it's about the love of Music!

Record Production

It's more Art than Science, most importantly it's about the love of Music!

With that said, you cannot accidentally produce a great vocal. There's no software for that yet. I have spent years sharpening my production skills knowing exactly how to craft "that vocal performance." Making sure when a record leaves my studio, the vocal sounds the best that the singer has ever heard themselves on a recording. I take this mindset into all aspects of a records production. "Artists and Bands need to feel confident and proud of what they're promoting to their fans or to record labels, and I take that responsibility very seriously. And whether it's working on song arrangements, instrumental parts, and overall sonic vibe and aesthetic, I'm fully engaged and committed to achieving and meeting expectations and goals."

Instruments Played and Skill Set:

Drums and percussion, Electric and Acoustic Bass, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, and Keyboards. Drums and Keyboard programming, and Pro Tools power user. 30 years professionally recording and mixing, and mastering. Staff Songwriter for Sony Music Publishing. And co-owner of Generic Records / The Orchard.

When I was 16 years old, a chance meeting and friendship with a close cousin of Jimmy Hendrix forever changed the path of my life. One day she asked me "would you like to see Jimmy's studio?" A quick phone call later and we were on our way to Electric Lady Studios. Although Jimmy had been long gone, you could still feel the mark he made on the studio. As soon as I stepped foot in the control rooms, I knew this was where I needed to be. Since that life changing moment, I've had the good fortune to have spent many years, starting out as an assistant engineer, to eventually becoming head engineer for many outstanding and award winning record producers. Working in some of the worlds greatest studios. Including getting to work at Electric Lady, mixing many records in the famed "Jimmy's Room." One of the things I learned very early on was that "the lead vocal performance and vocal production" was the key to a great production. Yes the beat, tracks, and music needs to be slamming, but the lead vocal and vocal production is often where a record lives or dies. With pro software production tools becoming more available to anyone with a computer and a pair of speakers, more than ever it's easier to get close to achieving a close to current sounding track and beat production.

Mixing

Mixing

Mixing for Major and Independent record labels, Producers, Artists, and Entertainment Companies.

Mixing is a skill unto itself. It's a process that is learned, honed, and crafted over many years. At the start of my career I had the good fortune of assisting some of the music worlds top mix engineers. Applying what I've learned from other engineers, and working on countless mixes in nearly every genre of music I eventually found my sound. To me mixing is a creative process. Yes, an engineer needs to know the technical in's and out's of the gear used to craft a mix, but over time those things become second nature. Once considered a technical element now become a sonic paintbrush, a tool that's guided by a creative mindset.

No matter what I'm mixing and who I'm mixing for, everyone and every project gets the same level of focus and attention. A project is considered mixed when everyone involved is completely satisfied with the end results, period.

Below are highlights of some of the projects and producers that I've worked for, both Mixing and Mastering:

Deee-Lite, Erasure, Sinead O'Connor, Graham Nash, Toby Gad, They Might Be Giants, The Cro Mags, Amanda Ayala (2016 contestant on The Voice) Don DiLego, Beautiful Small Machines, Ben Arthur, J.P. Bowersock, Two In A Room, Hollis Brown, Chubby Checker, Lost Elysium, Chloe Temtchine, Liquid Soul, Bree Sharp, Dead Heavens, Saul Williams, Tom Dobson, Rise Robots Rise, Die Warzau, Slaughter House, Company Flow, Two Without Hats, Mark Anthony, Todd Terry, Tommy Musto, Frankie Bones, Lenny D, Danny Tenaglia,  Rubix Kube, Sly & Robbie, Mars Williams, Doug Wimbish, Richie Scarlet, The Fat Boys, Dougie Fresh, Doc Ice, Dennis Brown, Steel Pulse, The Blow Monkeys, Corina, Book Of Love, Third Eye, Hunters and Collectors, Kate Cebrano, The Reels, Poi Dog Pondering, The Latin Rascals, Leslie Gore, Charley Gracie etc...

mastering

I know how critical it is to the success of your project that your masters have the impact needed to be competitive.

mastering

I know how critical it is to the success of your project that your masters have the impact needed to be competitive.

Finding a mastering studio and engineer is a critical decision. Having the right engineer with a fresh perspective, skill set, equipment, and attitude when wrapping up the mix and
preparing for mastering can be the difference between having a record that just misses, or leads to a finished production that has the sonic impact necessary to be competitive.

At Le Sonic I encourage you to make mastering a part of the productions mix stage and pre-mastering process, and not just an afterthought where you hand off your mixes and hope for the best. Mastering does not have to be a leap of faith or some mysterious process.

My successful career as a recording and mixing engineer, and then eventually becoming a songwriting member of the Sony Music Publishing team has given me a very broad skill set. These experiences have allowed me to not only communicate with my clients in invaluable ways, as a mastering engineer it's given me a broadened skill set when needed in a session.

An important aspect of mastering is quality control. Mastering can only get one so far, which is why I encourage making mastering an integral part of your production to help your mixes translate with maximum impact. Because not all mastering studios and engineers are created equal both in method and equipment, "quasi-processing" your mixes at the mix stage to guess how your mixes will translate once at mastering is not an ideal practice. Your sessions with Le Sonic includes mix and pre-mastering consultations, as well as actually mastering your close to finished mixes. This unique approach and service leaves no mystery as to how your mixes will translate.

Whether you're a major label or independently funded project, the goal is to ensure that you're 100% confident with your masters, and knowing once releasing your music commercially that you're putting your absolute best foot forward.
